If your physical Mac hardware is not working out of the blue, sure a reboot may ‘fix' it, but more often than not an SMC reset is needed. Resetting the SMC should only be attempted after Steps 1 and 2. Apple Care advised plugging keyboard to MBP direct to isolate that it is not a bad keyboard as well as trying update and resets. The system preferences/keyboard application has functions for setting up a bluetooth keyboard, but nothing to recognize/default to the USB keyboard when you have a laptop connected.
